Human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the U.S. We believe in the importance of education in empowering young people to recognize the risks, protect themselves, and take action. In addition to the prevention of human trafficking, and all the abuses that fall under its umbrella, our programs also support parents, guardians, teachers, community leaders, and law enforcement—everyone responsible for protecting children and young people.

OUR MISSION

  • Creating a safe space where youth can learn, share, and lead impactful advocacy in their communities.
  • Through education, creative campaigns, and collaboration with schools, families, and partners, Youth Underground amplifies youth voices to drive awareness and action against trafficking nationwide—building a generation that is not only informed, but actively working to protect human dignity and freedom.

OUR KEY ACTIVITIES

  • Raising awareness about human trafficking in a way that resonates with youth and empowers them to take action.
  • Delivering age-appropriate awareness programs that help youth understand the warning signs, build confidence, and develop tools to stay safe online and in their communities; and training adults (parents, teachers, law enforcement, child care institutions, etc.) about human trafficking.
  • Engaging youth in creating activities, discussions, and the tools to fight human trafficking.
  • Promoting and celebrating youth-led anti-trafficking projects, empowering young people to lead discussions, create awareness campaigns, and inspire change within their schools and communities.

1. THE YOUTH FOCUS

Children and young people are often the primary victims of human trafficking, with some as young as four years old. However, they are also powerful advocates against this crime, influencing their peers, parents, guardians, and teachers. As today’s change-makers, they play a crucial role in raising awareness and driving action. We actively involve youth in the conversation about human trafficking and in shaping the response to prevent it.

2. THE EDUCATION FOCUS

At our core, we believe that educating youth is the key to preventing human trafficking. Awareness starts with the younger generation, and we empower them by sharing the truth. Our approach to education goes beyond traditional academics. It’s a two-way conversation where adults and youth learn from each other.

Education is about understanding what truly matters to the youth and what they need to know. It includes emotional intelligence, respect, and compassion. By equipping the youth with the knowledge to recognize and prevent human trafficking, we empower them to navigate the world confidently and safely. When students feel secure in their schools and universities, it boosts their self-esteem and confidence, helping them realize their potential to shape the world they want to live in.

Ultimately, education provides the tools necessary to thrive beyond academics—in their communities, workplaces, and throughout their lives. While many call youth the leaders of tomorrow, we see them as the leaders of today.

3. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A “SAFE SPACE”

Youth Underground is a safe space where young people can freely express themselves and feel heard. We provide a platform for them to share their knowledge, news, and campaigns from around the world. Through peer-to-peer learning, youth are empowered to shape the world they want to live in and equip themselves with tools to prevent human trafficking and protect their well-being.
